Both plans cost $20 a month in the US, so the choice comes down to the work you do most. Pick ChatGPT Plus if you want image generation, voice, and the widest set of built-in tools in one app. Pick Claude Pro if your days are mostly long documents, careful writing, research reports with citations, or coding with Claude Code, and you like saving a little with annual billing ($17 a month, paid yearly). If you are unsure, start with the free tier of each, run the same three real tasks through both, and pay for the one you keep reaching for.
Prices, models, and limits below were checked on the vendors’ own pages on 13 October 2026. This page is for adults choosing one paid AI assistant for everyday work, not for teams buying seats. Plans change often, so verify current pricing on the official site before you subscribe.

OpenAI’s pricing page describes Plus as it applies to ChatGPT Work and Codex. Read the table as a map of what each plan documents, not as a score. Neither vendor publishes a fixed message count for everyday chat, and model names differ between parts of each app. On the ChatGPT side, the models page says GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna run in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not in regular Chat, so the model you see in a normal chat window may carry a different name.
Decision criteria
Feature lists look alike at first glance. Three questions separate the plans more clearly than any benchmark chart.
What do you produce most?
If your output is visual, such as a poster for a community event, a product mockup, or a picture for a slide, ChatGPT Plus has built-in image generation and editing. Claude’s plan page lists Artifacts, Claude Design, Slides, and Docs, which suit structured documents and simple visuals, but it does not list image generation.
If your output is text that has to hold together over many pages, such as a policy draft, a long report, or notes from a stack of PDFs, Claude Pro is built around that. Claude’s pricing page lists a context window of up to 1M tokens, varying by model, which is the amount of text it can keep in view at once. Pro also adds Research, where Claude runs several searches in a row and returns a report with citations you can check.
How do you hit limits?
Both plans meter usage in rolling windows. On Claude Pro, your session limit resets every five hours, and a separate weekly limit applies across all models. Long files, long chats, and heavier models use your allowance faster, and Research can use limits faster because it reads many sources.
ChatGPT publishes rough estimates instead. For Plus, the pricing page shows about 15 to 160 local messages per five-hour period with GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex, with weekly limits possible on top. Those are estimates, not promises, and image requests use included limits about three to five times faster. Check current limits on the official site, since both companies adjust them.
Where do you already work?
Think about the apps you open every morning. ChatGPT Plus includes ChatGPT for Excel, voice, connectors, and scheduled tasks. Claude Pro adds Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, plus the ability to hand off and schedule tasks. If your files live in Word and Outlook, Claude’s add-ins may save more clicks. If your life runs on spreadsheets and you also want pictures, ChatGPT may fit better.
Pricing structure and long-run cost
On sticker price the plans tie. ChatGPT lists Plus at $20 per month. Claude lists Pro at $20 billed monthly, or $17 a month with an annual plan of $200 paid up front. Claude’s help center notes that prices vary by region and that some regions add tax at checkout, so your local cost may differ.
Here is what that means over a year, using only the listed prices:
- ChatGPT Plus, monthly: 12 x $20 = $240.
- Claude Pro, monthly: 12 x $20 = $240.
- Claude Pro, annual: $200, paid once.
- Both plans together: $480 a year, or $440 with Claude billed annually.
Two extra costs can creep in. Both plans let you keep going after a limit by paying more: ChatGPT Plus users can purchase additional credits, and Claude Pro users can enable usage credits. Also, Claude Pro does not include API usage; building your own app on Claude is billed separately. The same split applies on the OpenAI side, where the pricing page says API token prices are separate from subscription usage.
A practical tip: if you are new to paid AI, avoid the annual Claude plan for your first month. Pay monthly, confirm you use it most weeks, then switch to annual for the saving. Anthropic’s terms say payments are non-refundable except where its terms or local law say otherwise, so check refund eligibility before you buy annual.
When to choose each option
Choose ChatGPT Plus if
- You want one subscription that covers writing, images, voice chats, and quick web lookups.
- You work in Excel often and want help with formulas, tables, and summaries there.
- You may try coding with Codex and want it across the web, a terminal, and your phone.
- A teen aged 13 to 17 in your household wants their own ChatGPT account, which needs a parent’s or guardian’s permission; Claude does not allow users under 18.
Choose Claude Pro if
- Most of your work is long writing, editing, or reading large documents.
- You want a research report with citations rather than a quick answer.
- You use Word, Outlook, or Chrome all day and want the assistant inside them.
- You want Claude Code, or access to Opus models, which the free Claude plan does not include.
Paying for both
Some people keep both: Claude for drafting and long documents, ChatGPT for images and voice. That works, but at $40 a month it is worth a monthly check. If one app sat unused for two weeks, cancel it.
Task-by-task scenarios
These are hypothetical examples to show how the decision plays out. They are not tests or user stories.
A retired teacher writing a local history booklet. She has 60 pages of scanned notes and wants a clean 20-page draft. Claude Pro suits this: large context, Projects to keep the files together, and Research to check dates against public sources. She would still verify every date herself.
A small bakery owner. He needs weekly social posts with pictures, a price list in a spreadsheet, and quick replies to customer questions. ChatGPT Plus covers the images and the Excel work in one plan.
A career changer learning to code at 50. Both plans include a coding agent, so the better choice is the one whose explanations make sense to him. A fair test is to ask both to explain the same short script line by line and keep the one he understands.
An office manager drowning in email. Claude for Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft 365 is listed on the Pro plan. Before connecting any inbox, she should set the tool to ask before it sends, deletes, or files anything.
A simple two-week test works for any of these. Pick three tasks you really do each week. Run each one in the free tier of both tools in week one, then pay for one plan in week two and repeat. Score each result on three points: how much you had to fix, how long it took, and whether you trusted it. The scores will tell you more than any review.
User experience, support, and help resources
Both tools work on the web, desktop, and phones. Claude lists chat on web, iOS, Android, and desktop on every plan, plus voice mode and incognito chats. ChatGPT documents its features in a public help site, including guides on projects that keep related chats, files, and instructions together. Claude has the same idea under the name Projects.
For support, both companies rely mainly on help centers rather than phone lines. Claude’s help center covers billing, limits, and plan features in plain articles, and says Anthropic has no standing discounts available upon request, though it sometimes runs limited-time promotions. ChatGPT’s learning site covers usage, models, and pricing questions, with a usage dashboard that shows remaining limits and reset times.
The learning curve is similar. Both reward the same habits: give context, say who the result is for, ask for a format, and check the answer.
Tradeoffs and caveats
Every plan here comes with limits worth knowing before you pay.
- Performance claims. This page does not rank which model is smarter. OpenAI describes GPT-6.1 Sol as offering near-Astra performance at a lower cost, but that is the vendor’s own description. Your own tasks are the only test that matters.
- Models change fast. GPT-5.5 was scheduled to retire from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on 14 October 2026. Expect names on both sides to keep shifting.
- Age rules. ChatGPT requires users to be at least 13, with a parent’s or guardian’s permission under 18. Claude requires everyone to be at least 18. Do not let a child below a tool’s minimum age use it, even on a parent’s account.
- Privacy. Never paste ID numbers, card numbers, passwords, or health records into either tool.
- Browser and email agents. When an assistant reads web pages or messages, hidden text on a page can try to steer it. This is called prompt injection. Give the tool access only to what the task needs, and keep approvals on for sending, deleting, and payments.
- Availability. Claude Pro is offered only in supported locations, and some ChatGPT features roll out by plan and region.
Learning to get more from either plan
The subscription is the smaller part of the cost. The larger part is time spent learning to ask well. Short daily practice helps more than long weekend sessions, especially if AI is new to you.
