Excel and Google Sheets Formula Generator
Describe what you need in plain words, fill in your ranges, and copy a working formula for Excel or Google Sheets.
Your formula appears here
67 recipes covering sums, lookups, logic, text, dates, finance and dynamic arrays. Fill in your own ranges and copy.
How to use the Formula Generator
- 1
Describe the task
Plain words: what to add, count, look up, extract or check, and on what. The matcher understands synonyms, so 'how many', 'total' and 'find' all work. - 2
Fill in your ranges
Each recipe shows the cells it needs with sensible defaults. Replace them with your own columns; the formula updates as you type. - 3
Copy into your sheet
Pick Excel or Google Sheets, copy the formula, and read the one-paragraph explanation so you can adapt it next time without the tool.
Stop searching for formulas. Ask AI inside your spreadsheet.
Coursiv's Claude for Excel and ChatGPT for spreadsheets courses show you how to describe any calculation, get the formula and check it.
A short quiz first. No payment details.
What the generator covers
Nine groups: sums and counts (SUMIF, SUMIFS, COUNTIF, COUNTIFS, unique counts, running totals), lookups (XLOOKUP, VLOOKUP, INDEX and MATCH, two-criteria lookups, last value), logic (IF, IFS, AND, OR, IFERROR, blank checks, SWITCH), text (first and last name, email domain, join, split, clean, extract numbers), dates (days and working days between dates, age, month end, quarter, overdue flags), math and stats (percent change, percent of total, rank, weighted average, median), data cleanup (duplicates, unique lists, text to numbers), finance (loan payment, future value, CAGR, margin) and dynamic arrays (FILTER, SORTBY, top N, SEQUENCE, ARRAYFORMULA).
Excel formula generator or AI: when to use which
For the everyday cases above, a recipe is faster and safer than an AI answer: it is already tested, it has no hidden assumptions about your data, and it comes with an explanation you can reuse. For the long tail, a one-off calculation with unusual rules, an AI assistant inside the spreadsheet is the right tool, provided you know how to describe the calculation and how to check the result. That skill is what the course after this tool teaches.
Reading a formula someone else wrote
Inherited spreadsheets are where most formula time goes. The Explain tab breaks a pasted formula into its functions by nesting level, names the ranges involved and reformats it one argument per line. Read it from the innermost function outwards: that is the order the spreadsheet evaluates it, and usually the order the author thought in.
